Dry Surf: Local Skateboarding History Exhibit

May 10, 2025 – January 31, 2026 | Tempe History Museum

I am super stoked to announce “Dry Surf: Local Skateboarding History” upcoming exhibit at the Tempe History Museum starting May 10, 2025 through January, 2026. “Dry Surf” is was an idea born out of the event we had at the museum in 2023 when we showcased “High Rollers Movie”, did a skate demo and had a live music performance by Fat Gray Cat.

For over a year we have been compiling artifacts, photos, videos and stories that cover the past 60 years of Arizona Skateboarding. Why is the exhibit called “Dry Surf”? Through research we uncovered that “Dry Surf” is the name of the very first skatepark in Arizona. Our state has a very unique and long story with skateboarding and we are attempting to showcase the story with our limited space and time. Along with the main exhibit there will be a rotating photo show in the community space during the course of the exhibit.

Steve “Ping!” Pingleton will be the first show at the opening. He will also be there in person with a hard-bound coffee table book of the Desert Pipes! John Holman and Gavin Troy, both iconic Arizona Skateboarding Photographers will share the space for the second round. The third show will be a group exhibit showcasing some amazing Arizona skateboarding.

Opening day will be Saturday, May 10 from 5-7 with a skateboarding demonstration in the plaza.

There are several events planned during the course of the exhibit TBA including a screening of “High Rollers: The Golden Age of Arizona Skateboarding” documentary and some live musical performances by some very special skateboarders. Stay tuned!
