Radical Periodical: A Dry Surf Online Exclusive

The High Roller Skateboard Park Featured in the Newspaper

The Dry Surf Exhibit was designed to stoke and inspire. Local ripper Alex PlesKovitch got stoked and inspired enough to do a deep dive into old local periodicals. He found some gems on the subject of The High Roller Skateboard Park and wanted to share.

The Tempe History Museum was limited on space and resources. The Dry Surf Exhibit chose to focus more on the Skate in the Shade Skatepark, located down the street from the venue at Southern and Mill Avenue. The High Roller Skateboard Park was featured in the Legendary Skate Spots Kiosk, however.

High Roller Beginnings

Rolling into its own… The Arizona Republic – Saturday, August 5, 1978

Morgan McCarthey and Donnie Ho sightings (mis-spelled the Ho-man’s name)!!

These amazing photos are from Republic staff photographer, Tom Story. This is 1978. No digital gear, no video, no Photoshop. Just Tom on assignment with probably no fucking clue what skateboarding even is. That photo of Morgan and Donnie is SOOO DONNIE! That undeniable style for miles, not to undermine Morgan’s ultra ripping-ness.
