The AZPX VHS (Very High Skaters) Series is our way of presenting our distant skateboarding past with footage and stories lifted from VHS tapes that have been sitting in a box since the late 80’s. The skating is not spectacular but the settings are and you get a raw portrait of how it went down. The quality, editing and sound are sketchy. This is some analog shit played on a big screen HDTV while being recorded to a smartphone on a tripod. I suck at video editing programs so what you see is what you get from my limited skills in the craft.
The second installment of the series, “High Lie Court”, captures rarely seen footage of one of Arizona’s treasured spots, The Jai Lai Court (situated at the site of a abandoned health care facility in central Phoenix) ca1989. This spot was a natural perfect concrete super wide quarter pipe, a favorite quick hit because it was a bust. The video and the skating is horrible but it’s what we got: A 110° August late Sunday morning with a bunch of fools showing up directly from Casey Moore’s pounding Bloody Mary’s after picking up Mike (Chanel) Maniglia from the airport. Needless to say the video is a mess but a totally rad document of the time.
The plastered cast: Jim ‘Tex’ Allen, Colin Choy, Chanel, DC Tom, Felix Epperson and Myself.
