What does a punk rock skateboard company have to do with thrash metal? Nothing, really. As a young skateboarder under the influence of The Minutemen I was taught that punk rock has no boundaries, nor should it be defined as a musical genre. Here’s a secret: skateboarders LOVE metal. Not just any metal, it’s gotta be GOOD, no-glam, no bullshit Metal. Slayer, Exodus, S.O.D. and especially Sacred Reich dominated the boom box at the sessions in the late 1980’s (for my crew, at least). Sacred Reich was always my favorite not just because they were from AZ, their music had a strong consistent message which was not the norm for metal bands often touching on the subject of evil or violence for shock value.
It’s a little known fact that a member of Sacred Reich is a skateboarder. Fast forward to a few years ago when Ryan and I frequented the Wedge on Friday nights. There was another older dude who always showed up to skate with his daughter, of course we became friends. One night, Ryan wore a Slayer shirt to the Wedge. This dude made a comment about Ryan’s shirt, I interrupted them with a loud ‘Sacred Reich!’ in my best metal voice throwing the horns. He says to me, “Sacred Reich? Do you know who I am?” Ryan and I looked at each other, “No”. This whole time we have been skating and hanging out with the lead guitarist of Sacred Reich, Wiley Arnett.
