Birth of The Wedge Skatepark

The Wedge Skate Park, 1997

I love The Wedge Skatepark. Hate it or love it, it’s my local spot. I raised my son at The Wedge and he is now a resident ‘Wedge Rat’ uber ripper. I can skate to The Wedge from my house without crossing any traffic lights. To today’s standard, the place is more of a Skate Spot than a city skate park and there is NO fence around it!

I was digging through some old photos and came across a couple of early digital photographs I took of The Wedge Skate Park being built in about 1997 (the park opened in 1999). My apologies for the low-res images but this was the dawn of digital photography. As you can plainly see, the construction company had no idea HOW THE FUCK to build a skate park. The City of Scottsdale undoubtedly chose the lowest bidder. They are still excavating the ‘deep end’ while the rest of the ‘bowl’ poured! Plus construction took about two fucking years to complete!

I also found one of the earliest photos of me skating The Wedge when it first opened….
